Why Custom Sized Equipment Matters

Imagine going for a run in trainers that are two sizes too big. You could shuffle along, but you’d waste energy, risk bad form, and probably learn some unhelpful habits. Dog training is similar: one size (or one approach) doesn’t fit all. The right-sized equipment doesn’t just “look tidy” — it shapes biomechanics, reduces confusion, and accelerates learning.

What “fit for purpose” really means

• Clarity for the dog: Correctly sized training products provide just enough guidance to make the desired behaviour obvious without forcing it.
• Consistency for the handler: Reliable boundaries and targets help you mark and reward with precision.
• Welfare and performance: Good fit reduces strain, compensations, and the sloppy repetitions that lead to frustration.

Dopamine boxes: size drives success A single “standard” dopamine box won’t suit every dog. Size affects access, posture, and difficulty: 

• Too big: Dogs end up stepping in with their front feet because the walls are too high and the reach is awkward — turning a focus exercise into a balance challenge.
• Too small: Short muzzles and broader heads can’t enter comfortably; tall, clever dogs will peek over the rim instead of committing their head inside (we’ve seen it — Loki, we’re looking at you).
• Wrong difficulty curve: Nervous or anxious dogs don’t need equipment making the protocol harder before they’ve built confidence or fluency.

The takeaway: equipment shouldn’t create the challenge; the training should. Our own German Shepherd never needed extra obstacles from the box itself — just clear criteria and reinforcement.

Positions boxes: form follows dimensions and a positions box teaches alignment only if its dimensions match the dog:

• Not long enough: If hips and the dogs rear end aren’t inside the box, it can’t guide a true square sit, stand, or down. 
• Too wide: The dog can slouch or flare their elbows. With no lateral guidance, you’re rewarding imprecision without noticing.
